I was thrilled to have the chance to visit with Kate Walsh, actress, business woman and activist at the VIP evening party for the Celebrating Triumph Luncheon for the Center for Success and Independence that was being held the next day, May 8th. For those of us that are die-hard Grey’s Anatomy fans, she is Dr. Addison Montgomery of G.A./Private Practice fame and could have been such a bigger than life character, but was instead such a down-to-earth, fun, and genuinely cool lady and the crowd loved her!

About Kate Walsh: She could not have been a neater gal. So hip, and honest that she made you feel like you were chatting with a good friend. She was full of enthusiasm for all that we discussed…first, her reason for being here. She said she had been here last year, was familiar with other Texas cities and loved Houston, especially the Heights area where the party was held (she said that!). She said she wanted to support the center because she was impressed by their success rate. This was a casual, informal affair but we did talk a little fashion shop. She is thrilled with how well her fragrance, Boyfriend, is selling. It is now in all Sephora locations, and for those of us that know how that works, that is no small feat, plus she was heading on Wednesday to do her stint on the Home Shopping Network for her fragrance as well. I was crazy for her flat booties that she was wearing (look closely in my photo with her below as I ensured we got them in). They were Chloe studded leather. Her dress was Isabel Marant and when I said I was in love with that designer’s clothes, she quickly quipped, “OMG, I am OBSESSED with her,” and looked just great in it. Let me also say that the dress was navy and black, which as a color-combo is my current obsession. What a delight she was….the coolest!

Scores of fans squeezed into a small reception area at the Houston Country Club for a special Tuesday meet-and-great with Private Practice star Kate Walsh, who traveled from Los Angeles to Houston for a fundraising event on behalf of The Center for Success and Independence (TCSI).

In between posing for pictures and signing autographs, Walsh spoke with CultureMap about how she became involved with the Houston-based youth treatment facility as well as her new fragrance Billionaire Boyfriend.

“These days, I’ve been working on my fragrance company, which has turned out to be a wonderful creative endeavor,” Walsh told CultureMap.

“I came down and toured the center a year ago and was really blown away by what they’re doing there,” Walsh said about a 2011 trip to Houston to visit TCSI’s innovative rehabilitation program for adolecents suffering from psychological, emotional or substance abuse disorders. “It was such an amazing place that I said I’d do whatever I could to help. So, here we are today.”

We love Kate Walsh for her character Addison Montgomery on Private Practice (and Grey’s Anatomy before that). She’s the perfect dichotomy. Tough as nails doctor in her professional life—and a hopeless romantic who never gives up on her love life. And Kate is not that different from Addison.

She believes in romance and passion and just an old fashioned love story—so much so that she even created her own perfume line called “Billionaire Boyfriend” to celebrate that ‘weak in knees, can’t imagine my life without you’ feeling in relationships.

“We definitely had lots of stories about crazy relationships not working and the travails of men and women and romantic comedies celebrating the female neurotic,” Kate explains. “But, I felt like we didn’t have any stories that were saying, ‘Hey Guys! We really love you and when you’re not around we really smell the shirts that you wear. The real romance to a relationship is that memory of him.”

And so we couldn’t resist. We had to have Kate take us on a walk down memory lane and dish on the Hollywood romances—from the big to small screen, from old school to today—that inspired her and never stopped her from believing in true love!

As Addison Montgomery on Private Practice, Kate Walsh is used to looking picture perfect for the cameras. But that doesn’t mean she always rolls into the makeup chair that way.

“After a long time of coming to work everyday and entering the makeup trailer with watery eyes and runny nose, I figured I had allergies,” the actress, 44, laughed, adding that her problems would start at home. “I’ve got four roommates and they all have fur and tails,” she told Parade.com. “So between all of those cats and dogs, it’s a festival of allergies. Plus the garden, it’s a nightmare.”

To help others combat “allergy face” Walsh partnered with Zyrtec, her go-to itchy eyes fighter. “I don’t like to take a lot of stuff since I’m really sensitive to medications,” she said. “But I take Zyrtec. It’s the one thing that works for me.”

It’s the moment Addison Montgomery has been waiting for since creator Shonda Rhimes spun the former Grey’s Anatomy character off into her own show Private Practice: She has a baby!

After declaring that she’d no longer be trying to be a mom, Addison (Kate Walsh) received a phone call in the closing moments of the episode informing her that a newborn was waiting for her at the hospital. Her patient, Judy, had chosen Addison to adopt her son, Henry, whom Addy had delivered earlier in the episode.

“Finally!” Walsh told TVGuide.com excitedly during a recent set visit. “It’s such a great reveal. It was so much fun to shoot, and the way that they wrote it, it’s such a surprise. It’s sort of along those lines of once you let go of wanting a kid, or wanting something, then it appears.”

Addison had spent much of the season desperately trying to get pregnant, much to the detriment of her relationship with Sam (Taye Diggs), who wasn’t interested in being a father again. With Addison finally getting a baby, the story has come full circle from the pilot episode, in which Derek’s former wife traveled to Oceanside Wellness Center in hopes of getting pregnant.

“I feel like Addison is finally getting to be a real adult with getting the baby,” Walsh says, noting that Addison will now be more focused on the new addition to her family than anything else. “Even with all the other drama that’s still happening in the practice, it’s a little tempered because she’s got her baby now and it makes you automatically a grownup, and everything is put into a totally different perspective. She’s still involved, but she’s not as fever pitch involved.”

To make matters a little more complicated, Addison and Jake (Benjamin Bratt) made out during the hour… just moments before Addison and Sam shared a lip-lock. They were interrupted, however, by the baby phone call, which Addison conveniently failed to mention to Sam. Does baby Henry now squash any chance of Sam and Addison getting back together? “He seems to be pretty attentive for a guy that didn’t want to be a dad again,” Walsh says of the upcoming episodes.

Kate Walsh thinks women “hoard” their cosmetics because they think they’re too “juicy” to throw away.

The actress’ make-up artist has a big input when it comes to her beauty bag. Kate says all woman should take a leaf out of her book and regularly update their cosmetics to ensure they always look their best.

“[He] came over to my house and just cleaned out the drawer and threw out like half of my make-up,” she revealed in an interview with People.

“The biggest tip is to throw out your make-up. I think as women even if we don’t mean to be hoarders, when you buy make-up it’s just so juicy you’re like, ‘Oh, I’ll keep it forever!’ and it’s like no, no, no, it all has an expiration date on it and you have to be really careful to get rid of it.

“[Lipsticks] last forever, right? Then you have a collection of them. But you can usually tell oddly by the smell that it’s time to throw them out.”

The red-headed beauty loves experimenting with her look. Kate appreciates the range of hues that are coming into trend for the upcoming season.

“I feel like I can take more risks. [My hair] is broken up with highlights, so it’s not so red-red, but I don’t think that’s any reason to shy away from a red lip or a coloured lip at all,” she explained.

“I love what’s happening with colour for spring. I love this trend toward red and orange lipstick and pinks and fuchsias and kind of a real blast of colour for spring and summer.”

Despite her seemingly sound beauty knowledge, Kate admits she’s not an expert. In fact, the stunning star prefers a more natural look when she’s off screen.

“I’m usually pretty lazy about make-up because I’m in it professionally so much, so when it’s just me out and about, I try not to wear much at all,” she said.
